I took piano lessons when  I was 8 until I was 10.  That's how I learned to read music.  After that I gave it up and switched to drums, which I played until I was 16.  I joined my first band called Red Sweatpants and we already had a drummer so I started playing keys again and never looked back.  From there I taught myself limited jazz theory and how to form chords and make melodies that I liked.

So yeah, I migrated from drums to keyboards, which shows up in my playing sometimes when I start banging sextuplets out on the keys.

I got started on the bass like a lot of other bassists- a garage band in high school needed a bassist. I originally played guitar(still do). My cousin went off to college and left his electric bass home. I "borrowed" it and still play the same bass to this day!
Some of the players I've really enjoyed are sort of underground-  Marc Friedman from The Slip really showed me that the bass can do all sorts of things a bass in normally not know for. Also, Garrett Sayers from The Miracle Orchestra and The Motet. He kills it. Thirdly, Reed Mathis from JFJO. Another spectacular player who really blows away the standard of bass playing. Check these guys out!

[at Tyler] that explains alot... about your style... it's very rhythmic

[at Tim] you as well... you name some monsters in Reed and Garrett

Tell us who you like to listen to both old school and new... that's directed towards both of you

Ive always liked jazz. Coltrane, Monk, Lee Morgan, Dizzy to name a few.

Ive recently been getting into LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, and a bunch of downtempo artists.

Hip hop too. Old stuff.

This will piss off some elegant jazz players but I sometimes I love to bang on my keys as hard as I can.

Who do I listen to old school and new?  He's a heavily abridged list:

Jimmy Smith
Herbie Hancock
Wayne Shorter
Return to Forever
Sun Ra
MMW
JFJO
Jimpster
A Tribe Called Quest
Ben Folds
Al Green (or any similar old soul)
LTJ Bukem
Lake Trout
Bjork
Portishead
Built to Spill
Simon Posford

I could really go on forever that's maybe 2% of what I'm into at the moment

I hear that Tyler.. tough to narrow down what you like when you're passionate about music in general... at least for me

Do you have a CD out and where can our members get it... let's give that one to Tyler

We recorded it this past Saturday at the Whiskey in Wilmington.  It went really well and we will be doing a couple of more recordings of shows:  one in Asheville and one more in Wilmington over the next month.  After that our live album will be mastered and put online for FREE.  It's going to be an official release but will be free for all..
